The crocodile Burt was the secret star of “Crocodile Dundee”, an ambassador for Australia's nature and a “confirmed bachelor”. Now the animal actor from the cult film with Paul Hogan has died, at the ripe old age of over 90. But soon there will be a reunion with Burt: at the cinema.

The secret star of “Crocodile Dundee” is dead. Crocodile Burt, who starred alongside Paul Hogan in the 1986 cult film, died over the weekend. The reptile zoo “Crocosaurus Cove” in Darwin, Australia announced this via its Facebook page.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Burt, the legendary saltwater crocodile and star of the Australian classic Crocodile Dundee,” the zoo wrote.

“The animal died peacefully,” it continues. Burt was estimated to have lived to be over 90 years old, and his death marked the end of an “incredible era.”

Movie star, ambassador and confirmed bachelor

In the 1980s, Burt was caught in Australia's Reynolds River. In 1986 he appeared in front of the camera alongside Paul Hogan aka “Crocodile Dundee”. The comedy became the most successful Australian film of all time.

Burt has been an attraction at Crocosaurus Cove since 2008. According to the Facebook obituary, the animal, which is over five meters long and weighs 700 kilograms, was distinguished by its “fiery temperament”. Burt had previously shown himself to be a “confirmed bachelor” with an “independent nature” on a crocodile farm.

Overall, Burt helped “shape Australia's image as a land of rugged natural beauty and impressive wildlife.” He was a “fierce and fascinating ambassador for crocodile education” because “he embodied the raw and untamed spirit of the saltwater crocodile.”

See Burt in the cinema again soon

In 2025, fans of “Crocodile Dundee” will be able to see Burt on the big screen again. “Crocodile Dundee: The 4K Encore Cut” will hit theaters in the second quarter of next year. For the first time, the adventure comedy is running in 4K quality.

“Crocodile Dundee: Lightning in a Bottle”, a documentary about the cinema phenomenon with material shown for the first time, will start at the beginning of 2025.
