There is little to complain about at the VW Touareg on the test bench. Despite often high mileage, the SUV proves to be a tough vehicle. During the main inspection at TÜV, he shows almost no weaknesses.
With the Touareg, something fundamentally changed at VW: the brand managed to set a sustainable fragrance brand in the upper class. Unlike the Limousine Phaeton, the large SUV with constant sales figures anchored as a status symbol.
This also makes him interesting and available as used. During the main car examination (HU), model generations II and III (since 2010) show hardly any weak points – with a few exceptions.
Model history
Touareg II came on the market in 2010, eight years after the very first model of the SUV from Wolfsburg. The 2014 facelift brought an optical revision outside as well as BI-Xenon headlights and multi-collision brake in the standard equipment. The engines were also revised. In 2018, number three rolled to the dealers – larger, wider and lighter. The last model maintenance so far dates from 2023.
Body and variants
There are no variants in the design, the VW Touareg II is a large SUV with five doors, five seats and all -wheel drive. However, hybrid versions and the design R with well over 400 hp were launched.
Dimensions (according to ADAC)
- Touareg II: 4.80 MX 1.94 MX 1.71 m (L x W x H), trunk volume: 580 to 1642 L (hybrid versions: 493 to 1555 l)
- Touareg III: 4.88 MX 1.98 MX 1.72 m (L x W x H), trunk volume: 810 to 1900 L (hybrid versions: 665 to 1675 l).
Strengthen
The Touareg brings driving comfort, dynamics and off -road capability. Thanks to gearbox reduction and differential lock, he can cope better off -road than other SUVs, which often even lack the standard all -wheel drive in the Touareg, and the trailer load is a whopping 3.5 tons. The error rate of the steering system is 0.0 for the first two main inspections (Touareg III), according to the “Auto Bild TÜV-Report 2025”.
Also, the third generation has no problems with the components of the lighting, while the predecessor does well with indicators and low beam. There are hardly any striking complaint rates when it comes to brakes. The exhaust gas test (AU) is almost always passed; Rust on the exhaust is a rarity.
Weaken
The Touareg III is failed in the axis suspensions, which are criticized above average for the first check. At the second test date, the problem becomes even clearer.
The predecessor is often objected to for a defective steering system. As the only criticism in the chapter brakes, the report meals the function of the foot brake that weakens Touareg II at the age of seven.
Used car pricing should also pay attention to the engine and gearbox loss of oil, which is very often too good for the older ones.
Breakdown behavior
The ADAC classifies the Touareg of the first registration years 2018 and 2019 with a view to the club's breakdown statistics as “very reliable”. He only certifies “medium reliability” from 2010 to 2012. Touaregs land in good places from 2013 to 2017 and from 2020.
The club has identified the focus of the breakdown: problems with the injection nozzles in cars from 2012 and 2013 as well as a mild starter batteries (2010).
