Singer Alfa Anderson is dead. The chic musician died on December 16th at the age of 78, her rep confirmed to Entertainment Weekly. Anderson's voice can be heard on disco hits such as “Le Freak”, “Good Times” and “I Want Your Love”.
Nile Rodgers, co-founder of Chic, said goodbye to his colleague on Instagram on December 18th. “Thank you for everything,” the musician wrote on a clip with pictures of Anderson and the group and the text: “RIP Alfa Anderson Chic Organization, forever loved.” The unverified Instagram account “The Chic Organization” is also linked to it.
Born in Georgia in 1947, Anderson wrote her first songs as a child, but pursued a conventional career alongside her musical dream. She graduated from Columbia University and worked as a teacher. In 1978 she became co-lead singer with Chic and went on to sing on many of Rodgers' songs, including for Diana Ross, Bryan Adams and Mick Jagger. In the '90s, Anderson earned a second master's degree in educational leadership and became principal at El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice High School in Brooklyn.
