It was only in November last year that Federal Minister of Agriculture Özdemir announced his separation from his wife – after 20 years of marriage. But now the 58-year-old is already in love again – with a lawyer from Canada who is 20 years younger than him. She is said to be “very nice”.
Who likes to be alone? Certainly not Cem Özdemir. And so the Federal Minister of Agriculture and Green Party politician now has a new woman at his side, just nine months after announcing that his marriage had failed. But first things first.
Cem Özdemir was in his mid-30s when he met and fell in love with Argentinian journalist Pia Maria Castro in 2001. The two married in 2003. The couple had a son and a daughter. In November 2023, however, the bad news came: the marriage was over after exactly 20 years. However, they wanted to remain “in friendship” and, with a view to privacy and “above all in the interests of our children,” did not want to make any further statements.
In fact, the separation of Özdemir and Castro was actually quite a while ago when it was finally made public, it was said. And so the 58-year-old is unlikely to just stumble from one relationship to the next without warning. Even if he met his new partner at the end of 2023 and has been in a relationship with her since the beginning of 2024.
At Sting concert in Stuttgart
The “Stuttgarter Zeitung” found out that she exists. And that's not all. The paper, which is based in Özdemir's home state of Baden-Württemberg, also has details about the woman's identity. According to the newspaper, her name is Flavia Zaka. At 38, she is exactly 20 years younger than Özdemir, comes from Canada and works as a lawyer. Before studying law and politics, she was involved as a project manager in an initiative to combat human trafficking in Ontario.
Özdemir and Zaka recently attended a concert by musician Sting as part of the “Jazz Open” festival, which took place in Stuttgart from July 18 to 29, the report continues. There, the politician introduced her to “several guests,” according to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung.” Ballet star Eric Gauthier, who also comes from Canada, also got into conversation with her. “She is very nice and you can really feel how happy she and Cem Özdemir are,” he is quoted as saying.
The paper also found an unnamed friend of the couple. He, in turn, chatted about the two: “They also get on very well with Cem's former wife.”
Özdemir himself did not initially comment on his new love. But at least his Stuttgart constituency office is said to have confirmed to the newspaper that he is no longer pursuing a solo career.
