Weapons master Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who is considered partly responsible for the fatal shooting on the “Rust” film set, will not be released for the time being after her conviction. Your request for early release is rejected.
Armsmaster Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, who was sentenced to 18 months in prison for manslaughter, remains in prison. Judge Mary Marlowe Sommer rejected a request for release, as the court in Santa Fe (New Mexico) has now announced. She also spoke out against a new trial. Gutierrez-Reed was convicted by a jury in March and later sentenced by the judge to the maximum prison sentence possible.
Gutierrez-Reed's lawyers had appealed the gun master's guilty verdict several times, but have always failed with requests for release or a new trial.
Live ammunition in prop weapon
During the filming of the western “Rust”, in which actor Alec Baldwin served as producer and star, Gutierrez-Reed was responsible for gun safety on set. During rehearsals in October 2021, 42-year-old camerawoman Halyna Hutchins was fatally injured when a shot went off from a prop gun being operated by Baldwin. Gutierrez-Reed had loaded the revolver, which contained live ammunition. The prosecution accused her of disregarding safety precautions and failing to check the cartridges. The question of how the live ammunition got onto the set has not yet been clarified. Both Gutierrez-Reed and Baldwin had repeatedly denied blame for the incident.
Baldwin was also charged with involuntary manslaughter in a separate case. But in July, Judge Sommer surprisingly stopped the trial that had already started. The defense lawyers had accused the public prosecutor of withholding evidence and thus gross misconduct.
