Even a combustion engine veteran like the Toyota Hilux will venture into the world of electric drives in the future. But the pick-up starts small.

Toyota will introduce the Hilux Hybrid, which was presented at the end of 2023, along with a few other innovations for the pick-up series in Europe at the beginning of 2025. The hybrid will only be available in combination with the around 5.30 meter long double cab.

The drive is a 2.8-liter diesel in combination with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is supported by a 48-volt starter generator. This drives an electric motor generator, which in turn charges the hybrid battery and supports the diesel when accelerating with up to 12 kW of power and 65 Nm of torque. The electricity is provided by a lithium-ion battery weighing just under 8 kilograms with around 2 kWh of storage capacity, which is hidden under the rear seat.

Despite the E-Boost, the Toyota only states the diesel value of 150 kW/204 hp. The additional electric drive should also have a positive effect on driving dynamics. In addition to lower consumption, mild hybrid technology should also ensure gentler load change reactions, a stronger engine braking function and an improved start-stop function. There is a display mode in the cockpit display that provides information about the electrical energy flows in the drive system.

Six driving modes, extended assistance systems

With the hybrid, Toyota is also introducing the Multi-Terrain Select system for the series, with which the driver can choose between six driving modes. This is intended to improve traction, handling and stability under various driving conditions.

In addition, the range of functions of the assistance systems has been expanded. In the future, the collision avoidance system will be able to react to pedestrians at night and when turning, while the adaptive cruise control automatically adapts the speed to speed limits. Also new on board is a dynamic high beam that adapts to the respective situation.

For the 2025 model year, Toyota is also giving the Hilux more intelligent assistance systems. For the 2025 model year, Toyota is also giving the Hilux more intelligent assistance systems.

The facelifted Hilux gets a JBL sound system and more connectivity features for the infotainment system. Apple Carplay will be possible wirelessly in the future, Android Auto will remain wired. Vehicle functions can also be controlled remotely using an app.

Toyota has not yet announced prices for hybrids that are likely to be well over 50,000 euros.
