After stopping gas transit via Ukraine
Austria now obtains most of its gas from Germany

After the route via Ukraine is no longer available, Austria will have to look for a new gas supplier. Germany also plays a role in this.
After the transit contract between Russia and Ukraine expired, Austria primarily receives its natural gas via a replacement route through Germany. This is what the Austrian newspaper “Der Standard” writes, citing a data analysis by the Austria Press Agency (APA).
Accordingly, around 120 gigawatt hours of gas have been imported via Germany every day since January 1st. However, this is only a fraction of the previous delivery volume from Russia: Since the volume of up to 300 gigawatt hours per day has completely disappeared, Austria is covering the remaining requirements with gas from its storage facilities.
As “Der Standard” writes, the gas supplied by Germany comes from Norway. Alternatively, Italy could also step in as a supplier – but this route is rarely used.
Along with Hungary and Slovakia, Austria was one of the few EU countries that would also receive gas from Russia in 2024. In Austria, the Russian gas share averaged 80 percent last year. The transit stop ended the cooperation between the Alpine republic and Russia that had existed since 1968.
