France honors its deceased icons with moving and pompous farewells. The funeral ceremonies for the actor Belmondo and singer Hallyday resembled processions in parts. Acting legend Delon did not want this. He will therefore be laid to rest in a small circle.
France's film legend Alain Delon is to be buried on his estate La Brûlerie in Douchy, central France, as he wished. The funeral is to take place in a small group in the middle of this week, reported the television station BFMTV. The burial will take place in the chapel built for this purpose, next to his numerous dogs who are buried there. Delon died on Sunday at the age of 88.
As the broadcaster further learned, a ceremony will be considered at a later date that will allow the public to pay their last respects to him. The actor had made it clear several times that he did not want a national tribute like Jean-Paul Belmondo or Johnny Hallyday.
In 2021, there was a state ceremony for the actor Belmondo in the courtyard of the Invalides in Paris, and President Emmanuel Macron gave a moving eulogy. The coffin was decorated with the French flag and the national anthem was played. Hundreds of thousands of people attended the funeral for the rock singer Hallyday in 2017. The coffin was driven along the Champs-Élysées in Paris. Macron also gave a speech.
As the regional newspaper “La République du Centre” reported, the prefecture has imposed a temporary no-fly zone at low altitude over Delon's huge estate in the Centre-Val de Loire region for security reasons. Since the death of the film legend, numerous people have made a pilgrimage there to lay flowers in front of the entrance gate. The flight ban is to remain in effect until Wednesday evening.
